Work Based Learning
Students come to us for an agreed length of time for work based learning. This is usually arranged through the school and Canterbury Horse Rescue. During the Work Based Learning Programme students can learn how to handle and care for horses and ponies. Students are encouraged to learn about grassland management and the correct feeding of horses and ponies. Students can learn how to groom and check horses and ponies for signs of problems. We encourage good practice in the stables as well as in and around the yard and each stable is tailored toward each horse or pony. Students can learn different methods of stable preparation and the reasons why they are necessary.
The Work Based Learning Programme is an excellent introduction, providing foundation knowledge for the equine NVQ's. It gives students an opportunity to experience a 'working yard' and their suitability for this type of vocation. Each student is given a set day to attend the centre. The centre opens at 8.30 and closes at 4pm. Regular attendance and punctuality by the student on set days is essential and links between the school and the centre monitor this. Each student is allocated a mentor who is on hand to give encouragement, support and advice while they are with us. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for themselves in a working environment. This often raises low self-esteem and builds confidence and a
responsible attitude towards others. At the end of the programme students are given a reference detailing all the achievements they have made while they were with us.
